A mixtape in the key of understanding

#HRMixtape2018 #HRMixtape

Thanks Mark Hendy for this fab idea!

Here is my mixtape in the key of understanding….

Much of what happens in work and in HR is about people being people, doing people stuff with other people, of course there is much that is about policies, transactional doing stuff, process and suchlike but it all starts and ends with people.

How we develop the #PeopleExperience in work is really important, getting it right can mean that you make a positive difference to many peoples lives and getting it wrong means that you can do the opposite and make life harder than it needs to be [unnecessarily]

If its starts and ends with people then understanding people might be important?

Song 1. Gary Gilmores Eyes – The Adverts

While the song is not the most wholesome ditty, it has a catchy tune and some insightful wisdom in just two lines:

“The Eye receives the messages, and send them to the Brain.

No Guarantee the stimuli must be perceived the same”

Whatever you are doing that touches how people perceive the world of work as you have designed it, remember that everyone is looking through their own lens at the world – what you see is not what others will see, they will have a different context – understand that this is the case.

This leads us nicely to another tune to bop to!

Song 2. If the kids are united – sham 69

Remember we are all in this together, you make choices to either collaborate or separate it is ultimately up to you! – so if you want to really do this together it is probably worthwhile taking some time out to understand the people you are going to spend a large amount of time with, as Sham 69 said:

“Just take a look around you, what do you see?

Kids with feelings like you and me!

Understand him, he’ll understand you

For you are him and he is you”

Song 3. True Colours – Cyndi Lauper

If you want people to buy in to what you are doing at work, with people, then at least be authentic, be honest and be you – I mean who else would you really want to be?

And sometimes at work it gets tough so the second message in this song is be there for each other – take the time to stop what you are doing and listen to other people.

“Because you know I’ll be there”

“If this world makes you crazy
And you’ve taken all you can bear
You call me up
Because you know I’ll be there

And I’ll see your true colors
Shining through
I see your true colors
And that’s why I love you
So don’t be afraid to let them show

Your true colors
True colors
True colors
Shining through

I see your true colours
And that’s why I love you
So don’t be afraid to let them show
Your true colours
True colours are beautiful
Like a rainbow”

Song 4. I don’t need a crap job – TOMMYANDMARY

Remember no one wants a crap job…and if you are the person that can influence the difference between a great job and a crap job you just have one thing you need to do here!

Again – you make your choices, so choose not to make peoples jobs crap ok?

“I don’t need a crap job, It’s the same shit different day”

What if life’s too short? What if life’s too short? I’m not wasting my time…”

Song 5. Crucify – Tori Amos

Human nature for many people seems to be one where we disproportionately beat ourselves up for what we perceive to be our shortcomings, the mistakes we make and the bar set we set based on how we compare ourselves to other people.

In work you will meet lots of amazing people – you are amazing too

“Why do we

Crucify ourselves

Every day

I crucify myself

Nothing I do is good enough for you

Crucify myself

Every day

I crucify myself

My heart is sick of being, I said, my heart is sick of being in chains, oh, oh, chains”

So there you have it – my 5 HR songs on understanding
